Hi all. A colleague suggested that I post this here. As an experiment I have set up the reddit software to work with the arxiv database, which you can see at http://arxaliv.org/
Each day it will update the list with the latest papers and you can upvote, downvote, comment, save links of interest, search, post new links, or create your own communities/arxalivs to post in or have others post links or writings of interest to them. You can de facto implement a journal this way with the editors/reviewers as the moderators.
To go to a specific category you can either click on the “my arxalivs” link at the top-left, or go to, eg, http://arxaliv.org/r/math.NT
Please let me know what you think, and whether there would be any use to a site like this!

So, what exactly can we do? Just comment and vote? No attachments? LaTeX? What about the legal status of the comments (CC? GFDL? PD? nothing?)?
I’m not criticizing, I just want to know; there seems to be no FAQ or anything like one. Or will this be amended in the next beta?
One feature/bug which should be addressed is that papers which are classed under several subject headings show up multiple times, e.g.

which shows up three times under math.MP, math_ph, quant_ph. On the front page there are seven papers which are repeated (two of them three times, and the rest twice) which clogs up the interface - people will need to scroll down/click next more times than should be necessary.

What would you like to see done with the comments? I can make a note on it once I know what it should be. I will work on adding LaTeX support for the titles and comments. For the most part, Arxiv is great for handling uploading, storage, processing, LaTeX submission, etc, and I was thinking that this would just be a basic overlay on top of that, and I’ll hopefully find out what is needed to make it useful.

Yes, this is unfortunate, and I’m not sure how to deal with it without rewriting a significant chunk of the code. The fastest way would be to have everything posted in one spot, and then tag it with the categories that it was submitted to. This would allow searching, but not allow browsing through categories as in /r/math.CO . Ideally one would just have a single post per paper and have it appear in each of the categries. Is there any benefit whatsoever to having separate postings per article-category?
rfurman: either LaTeX and/or uploading attachments (TeX and PDF) is necessary, I think.
Other than that, free licensing as a default should be added ASAP; if you add it too late, everything people contributed before will be of unclear legal status and therefore a major pain in the ass.
About categories: what happens if the arXiv admins recategorify a paper? (This happens not so rarely.)

There definitely is if people are browsing by category, but something like this should be implemented as tags on posts. I don’t know anything about how the reddit system works, though, so I have no idea if that sort of feature is available.
I’ll add in the copyright notice. Currently if the paper changes categories it will be listed under both (although the old and/or non-primary ones could be hidden or lowered in value). For now I can make it so that the copies do not all show up together on the main page, but it also looks possible to make the system support multiple-tags per article. Thanks for the comments!
Also, if anybody is available to help with any of copy writing, testing, coding, logistics, hosting, promotion, design, user interface/experience, etc etc, it would be greatly appreciated
Is there any thought of extending this to the cs.XX categories (like .CC/CG/DS) ?

Does it work now? The site has been a bit in flux lately, but it now is on a larger more stable server, it has all 750,000 arXiv papers (I am looking into bringing in data from other sources too) and each paper is posted once and cross listed to each category.
Yes, the problem seems to have vanished. There doesn’t seem to be any content yet, of course. (That is, comments.)
